Tata Power, in collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the International Growth Centre (IGC), has launched the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its Mumbai headquarters on December 19, 2025. This initiative aims to accelerate India's clean energy transition by leveraging cutting-edge research, data, and experimentation to improve the quality, reliability, and affordability of electricity services. The EIIL will focus on addressing critical challenges in India's power sector, including managing peak electricity demand and integrating renewable energy sources efficiently. The lab will utilize consumer behavioral science, data analytics, and energy systems modeling to test practical, scalable solutions. Key areas of exploration include improving demand-side management, enhancing grid resilience through smart meter and IoT data, and shifting peak electricity demand in urban households. An MoU was also signed between Tata Power, LSE, and IGC to co-develop scalable solutions for the power sector using evidence-based approaches and global best practices. The partnership, a model of UK-India collaboration, integrates global academic expertise with on-the-ground industrial capability. The Lab is envisioned to grow into a full-scale innovation hub with enhanced funding and broader mandates, including support for tariff design, consumer flexibility, distributed renewables, and energy equity.
