Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. (JISL) has commissioned a ~20,000 tonne/annum high-tech industrial-scale biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, in collaboration with its partners. This pioneering project, designed with global experts, aims to advance climate-smart agriculture, circular manufacturing, and engineered carbon removal at a commercial scale. The facility boasts a processing capacity of over 50 metric tonnes of agricultural and fruit processing residue per day, positioning it among the world's largest single-unit biochar reactors and placing India at the forefront of the global biochar and carbon removal movement. This plant is the first of several planned reactors, with additional units already under development. Biochar, a stable, carbon-rich material produced through pyrolysis of agricultural residue, offers a durable form of carbon sequestration for hundreds of years, improving soil health and acting as a credible form of carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Unlike unsustainable disposal methods, this process converts waste into a valuable resource. The project establishes a powerful farm-to-soil circular economy, where crop residues are transformed into premium biochar and returned to farmers' fields to enhance soil fertility, water retention, and promote climate-ready agriculture. This not only creates new income streams for farmers and reduces reliance on synthetic inputs but also leverages JISL's extensive infrastructure and distribution network to return biochar directly to farms at scale, a unique last-mile advantage in India. This initiative supports India's National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and enables farmers to participate in the global carbon economy. The biochar project delivers durable, measurable, and verifiable carbon dioxide removal credits, contributing to permanent carbon sequestration, reducing stubble burning, enriching soil carbon, and improving water-use efficiency. Alvin Lee, Head of Supply at Puro.earth, congratulated JISL on its significant biochar production output and facility commissioning, highlighting its leadership in CDR and commitment to quality. Anil Jain, Managing Director of JISL, emphasized that the project reimagines the agriculture value chain by creating a circular system that benefits all stakeholders, aligning with the company's vision of 'Creating shared value'.
