More Details on This News
Afcons Infrastructure Limited has announced a significant milestone with the first tunnel breakthrough achieved today in the City and Industrial Development Corporation’s (CIDCO) Augmentation of Hetawane Water Supply Scheme at Shaft-4 in Wahal village, Package 1.
This breakthrough marks a historic moment for CIDCO, being the first of its kind across all its projects. The package involves an 8.7 km treated water tunnel, with 5.52 km already completed. Afcons Executive Chairman, Krishnamurthy Subramanian, expressed congratulations to the project team and CIDCO, highlighting the adoption of innovative practices to set national tunnelling records despite geological and logistical challenges. He committed to completing the project six months ahead of schedule while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
The CIDCO project aims to increase water supply capacity from 120 million litres per day (MLD) to 270 MLD for Navi Mumbai's developing regions, involving a 13.25 km raw water tunnel and a 15.4 km treated water tunnel.
CIDCO's Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Vijay Singhal, praised Afcons for their speed, quality, and commitment to early completion, urging other contractors to emulate their performance. He noted this achievement follows another historic moment for Navi Mumbai with the airport's first flight.
Earlier, Afcons set a national tunnelling record by achieving 777 metres of tunnelling in a single month using the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Flamingo, surpassing their previous record of 714 metres set in May 2025.
